Frequently asked questions

Should I book tours in advance or on the spot?

For the Similan and Surin Islands, early-bird Phi Phi trips and anything in the Christmas–New Year and Chinese New Year peaks, book ahead: parks have quotas and the best boats fill. For ordinary longtail trips in quieter months, a day or two ahead is fine.

Are national park fees included?

Sometimes. Many operators list the fee separately and collect it in cash on the day. Check the “not included” section of each tour.

Speedboat, longtail or big boat?

Speedboats are fast but bumpy and can be hard on bad backs; they are not recommended for pregnant travellers. Longtails are slower, noisier and more atmospheric, and best for short hops. Large boats and catamarans are the steadiest, and the best choice if you get seasick.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Harbour authorities close routes when the sea is too rough, especially from May to October. Reputable operators then cancel and refund or rebook. Trips inside sheltered Phang Nga Bay are the least affected.

What should I bring on a boat trip?

Swimwear, a towel, a rash vest or shirt for sun protection, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, a dry bag, cash for park fees and seasickness tablets if you need them.
